I was hired to record a session with the very talented Rachel Smith, a singer/songwriter out of Northern California. The setting was a middle school band room that a friend let us borrow for an evening. I used a 3 light, 3 camera setup – positioning the hair light low enough to create some dramatic flares on the slider shot.
I recorded the audio in what might be an unconventional manner – with a shotgun mic on the vocalist. I ran that through a tube pre-amp and into the Tascam recorder, along with the acoustic guitar from a pickup. I mixed the audio down in Adobe Audition, color graded the footage in Adobe Speedgrade, and edited in Premiere Pro.
